A wildfire that broke out west of Colorado Springs within the burn scar from the 2012 Waldo Canyon fire has been mostly snuffed and firefighters who quickly surrounded it were monitoring hot spots early Wednesday. The National Weather Service has issued a red flag warning for the Colorado Front Range mountain foothills and the eastern plains due to record heat, dry grass, wind and low humidity — conditions that favor fire.About 50 firefighters were deployed to suppress this Rampart fire, which burned about 20 acres of grass and Ponderosa pines, 2.5 miles southeast of Woodland Park, on U.S. Forest Service land in western El Paso County. The cause hasn’t been determined. An aircraft dropped water on the flames after the fire broke out around 2:30 p.m. Tuesday and, by 5:30 p.m., firefighters had placed a hose around it. A U.S. Forest Service dispatcher said Wednesday morning that most of the firefighters had gone home but that eight fire trucks were sent to the site Wednesday...Letters: Protesting gun violence at Colorado, Tennessee capitols — disruptive or democracy in action?

Legislators need to be able to get work doneRe: “Inquiry sought on student’s removal,” April 7 news storyMuch as I might agree with the message of the anti-gun students in the Colorado Capitol gallery, they nor anyone else should not be allowed to disrupt the legislative session. Would my fellow Democrats be so understanding if passionate, screaming, pro-gun demonstrators did the same? The protesters were not arrested, not injured, and not barred from the Capitol grounds. State patrol was there to provide necessary and measured security, and that was exactly what they did. Unless the legislators plan to work in a perpetual cacophony, let security do its job unless unnecessary violence is happening.Roger Brisnehan, WestminsterI am speechless at the coverage of the high school student or students’ actions at the Capitol. Somewhere along the line they have learned that shouting like they are at a pep rally will get their point across. They are wrong.A part of getting y...Man fatally stabbed at Surfers Point in Ventura: Police

U.S. Bureau of Reclamation officials are considering whether to order Arizona, California and Nevada to take less water out of the drying Colorado River, effectively flexing their muscles over a problem they had hoped the states would solve themselves. In the coming weeks, federal officials must decide whether to impose cuts on the three lower Colorado River Basin states by either following the longstanding system of water-rights seniority or by spreading them across three states evenly. The former would put Arizona squarely in the crosshairs — threatening cities like Phoenix and Tucson — while the latter would force far more significant cuts on California, which draws the most Colorado River water by far.Colorado and the three other upper-basin states — New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming — appear to have avoided cuts of their own, at least in the short term. The Bureau of Reclamation’s two proposals to cut water allocations for lower-basin states are part of a supplemental environmental im...VTA light rail service resumes throughout Santa Clara County after electrical line issue

BY DEEPA BHARATH | Associated PressThe California Civil Rights Department has voluntarily dismissed its case alleging caste discrimination against two Cisco engineers, while still keeping alive its litigation against the company. The two Cisco supervisors were accused in the department’s lawsuit of discriminating and harassing an employee on the basis of caste – a division of people based on birth or descent.
