England’s Lionesses heralded as ‘game changers’ back home despite loss to Spain in World Cup final LONDON (AP) — The wait for a World Cup title goes on for England, but the Lionesses were still heralded as game changers back home after their loss to Spain in Sunday’s final in Sydney.King Charles III, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and a host of other politicians, royals and celebrities were quick to praise the England players on social media despite a 1-0 loss in the Women’s World Cup title match. “Although it’s the result none of us wanted, Lionesses you have done yourselves and this nation proud,” Prince William, who is the president of England’s Football Association, posted on social media. “Your spirit and drive have inspired so many people and paved the way for generations to come.” After winning the European Championship at home last year, England reached the championship match in the women’s global tournament for the first time. With super conferences and CFP expansion on horizon, 2023 is the end of an era in college football

With super conferences and CFP expansion on horizon, 2023 is the end of an era in college football Welcome to the final season of college football as we know it. Extreme? Maybe, but 2023 has an end-of-an-era feel. Texas and Oklahoma are taking their last lap in the Big 12. The Pac-12 is still a Power Five conference. Will it even be a conference in 2024 after the Big Ten opens its West Wing and the Big 12 expands yet again? The College Football Playoff is a four-team event for the last time this year before tripling in size. Everything about the collegiate sports model seems ripe for radical changes. But not quite yet. “It does seem like it will feel like a lame-duck year at some point in time,” former Big 12 Commissioner Bob Bowlsby said. Before the maps are redrawn (again) and the stakes are remade (again), there is one more season to left to appreciate what is being lost — or long for what’s being gained. “I’m resigned to it,” said ESPN’s Rece Davis on The AP Top 25 College Football Podcast. “There are parts of it I will miss very much because I consider mysel...

Where do the 2024 presidential candidates stand on abortion? Take a look COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — More than a year after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned the federal right to abortion, the issue has at times dominated the discussion among the Republicans seeking their party’s 2024 presidential nomination and is sure to be on display during the first GOP campaign debate Wednesday in Milwaukee. Some of the division among the candidates has come over whether there should be a national ban on the practice — and after how many weeks — now that the justices have returned specific debate over abortion legality to the states.A look at how the issue of abortion is playing out among Republican and Democratic candidates:REPUBLICANS DONALD TRUMP The former president, the current GOP front-runner, has often sidestepped the issue of abortion, even as Republicans across the country have celebrated the Supreme Court’s decision. In April, a major anti-abortion group assailed Trump on the issue, saying his contention that abortion restr...

Ten-man Lille earns first win of season by downing Nantes 2-0 in French league LILLE, France (AP) — Jonathan David and Adam Ounas scored to give 10-man Lille its first win of the season with a 2-0 victory over Nantes in the French league on Sunday.David opened the scoring in the 66th minute by converting a rebound after Nantes goalkeeper Remy Descamps had saved a header from Remy Cabella. The Canada striker also hit the bar with an effort from the edge of the box in the 43rd. Lille was down to 10 men in the 78th when Alexsandro fouled Nantes substitute Kader Bamba, who was bearing down on goal. Zelenskyy hails F-16 commitment on visit to Netherlands The Netherlands confirmed that it will provide Ukraine with F-16 fighter jets following approval from the U.S. allowing Ukrainian pilots to get training to fly the planes and eventually to provide the aircraft themselves.Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy received the assurance on the jets, which he called a “breakthrough agreement,” from Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte on a visit to Eindhoven on Sunday. Rutte confirmed that Denmark also will deliver F-16 aircraft to Kyiv, after the Biden administration last week gave final approval for the delivery of Dutch and Danish F-16s to Ukraine as soon as pilot training is complete. The Dutch government did not immediately say when the first F-16s might enter the conflict or how many the Netherlands will send. Zelenskyy told reporters that the exact number of aircraft will be discussed “a little later,” Reuters reported.“Today we can announce that the Netherlands and Denmark commit to the transfer of F...

From turmoil to triumph, Spain clinches its first Women’s World Cup title with a win over England By ANNE M. PETERSON (AP Sports Writer)SYDNEY (AP) — Spain wanted to celebrate its first Women’s World Cup trophy, not dredge up the turmoil that surrounded the team. Olga Carmona scored in the first half and Spain held on for a 1-0 victory over England on Sunday to cap the month-long tournament. Spain is the fifth winner in nine editions of the Women’s World Cup and joined Germany as the only two nations to win both the men’s and women’s titles. At the final whistle the Spanish players piled on each other in front of their goal. They were still dancing on the field until the trophy presentations, where they kissed the trophy and raised their arms triumphantly as golden glitter fell from above. “We’ve suffered a lot throughout the past 12 months but I think everything has a reason to be.
