James Maddison scores first Tottenham goal in 2-0 win over Bournemouth in EPL BOURNEMOUTH, England (AP) — James Maddison scored his first goal for Tottenham in a 2-0 win over Bournemouth in the Premier League on Saturday that maintained Spurs’ unbeaten start under Ange Postecoglou.Maddison put Spurs ahead in the 17th minute with a precise finish and Dejan Kulusevski doubled the advantage with his first goal of the season in the 63rd as Tottenham followed up last weekend’s home win over Manchester United with another impressive performance. The team now has two wins and a draw under Postecoglou while playing the attack-minded style of football that the manager has brought to the club. Though with Richarlison struggling badly up front for a third game in a row and still looking for a first goal of the season — he was taken off an hour into the game — some Spurs fans might still be wondering just how good this team could have been had the club not sold talismanic striker Harry Kane to Bayern Munich on the eve of the season. Tottenham dominated the fi...

Better since the break, DJ LeMahieu connecting with Yankees hitting coach Sean Casey

Better since the break, DJ LeMahieu connecting with Yankees hitting coach Sean Casey TAMPA — DJ LeMahieu appeared lost at the plate for most of the first half, but the former batting champion has shown off more of a vintage swing in recent weeks.LeMahieu is slashing .311/.423/.476 with five doubles, four home runs and six RBI in 30 games since the All-Star break. For comparison, the Yankees infielder hit .220/.285/.357 with 13 doubles, seven homers and 27 RBI in 76 games prior to the Midsummer Classic. That stretch had folks wondering if the days of LeMahieu’s machine-like production were over after a foot/toe injury derailed his 2022 season. But the 35-year-old appears to have come out on the other side of a prolonged slump, even if he won’t say so.“I don’t feel like I’m out of anything,” LeMahieu said Friday after the Yankees beat the Rays at Tropicana Field. “We’ve got a month’s worth of games left. It’s just continuing to move forward and continue to improve and be better.”LeMahieu spoke...

Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich appeals extension of pretrial detention in Russia Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich has appealed a Moscow court’s decision to extend his pretrial detention in Russia until the end of November, according to documents on the court’s website. The American journalist was arrested in March during a work trip to the city of Yekaterinburg, almost 2,000 kilometers (1,200 miles) east of Moscow. He is the first U.S. journalist since the Soviet era to be held on espionage charges in Russia. An order that authorized keeping Gershkovich in jail before trial was set to expire on Aug. 30. The Moscow City Court extended the custody order on Thursday by three months, drawing objections from U.S. government officials and the Journal. The court’s website on Saturday showed that Gershkovich’s defense team had filed an appeal. The court in June rejected his appeal of the earlier ruling to keep him behind bars until the end of August. Journalists gathered outside the court Thursday were not allowed to witness the proceedings. Russian st...

Maryland oral surgeon convicted of murder in girlfriend’s overdose death ROCKVILLE, Md. (AP) — An oral surgeon was convicted on Friday of a murder charge in the death of his girlfriend who overdosed on anesthetic drugs that he administered at his Maryland home.Jurors heard testimony that James Ryan, 50, set up an intravenous stand to administer the addictive drugs to his 25-year-old girlfriend, Sarah Harris, who was found died at his Montgomery County home in January 2022. Ryan faces a maximum of 55 years in prison when he is sentenced at a date to be determined, The Washington Post reported. An autopsy found that Harris died of intoxication from ketamine, propofol and diazepam. Prosecutors argued that Ryan showed “an extreme indifference” to Harris’ life by continuously supplying her with drugs as her addiction and health worsened. She weighed 83 pounds at the time of her death. Montgomery County Assistant State’s Attorney Jennifer Harrison said Ryan was a skilled oral surgeon who knew how risky the drugs could be,“And despite his vast knowledge an...

Wild horses that roam Theodore Roosevelt National Park may be removed. Many oppose the plan BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — The beloved wild horses that roam freely in North Dakota’s Theodore Roosevelt National Park could be removed under a National Park Service proposal that worries advocates who say the horses are a cultural link to the past.Visitors who drive the scenic park road can often see bands of horses, a symbol of the West and sight that delights tourists. Advocates want to see the horses continue to roam the Badlands, and disagree with park officials who have branded the horses as “livestock.”The Park Service is revising its livestock plans and writing an environmental assessment to examine the impacts of taking no new action — or to remove the horses altogether.Removal would entail capturing horses and giving some of them first to tribes, and later auctioning the animals or giving them to other entities. Another approach would include techniques to prevent future reproduction and would allow those horses to live out the rest of their lives in the park. The horses h...
