Braves’ Ronald Acuña out of lineup vs Miami with right calf tightness MIAMI (AP) — Atlanta Braves star Ronald Acuña Jr. was not in the starting lineup for Saturday’s game against Miami because of right calf tightness.Acuña first experienced discomfort in the seventh inning of Friday’s series opener while chasing a base hit to the right-field corner by Jazz Chisholm Jr. Acuña grounded into an inning-ending double play in the eighth, then left before the bottom half.“We’re going to put him down today,” Braves manager Brian Snitker said before Saturday’s game. “He said he felt better when he woke up. Still it’s enough to take him out. There’s no need to chance it.”With the Braves already having clinched the NL East, Acuña could miss additional time.“That’s a touchy spot and it doesn’t heal quick,” Snitker said. “We felt it was right to err on the side of caution.”Acuña singled twice Friday, raising his major league-leading hits total to 201. He is batting .337 with 37 homers, 98 RBIs and a big league-high 66 stolen bases. The 25-year-old Acuña susta...

Spirited Boston College rally falls short against No. 3 Florida State, 31-29 The Boston College Eagles rallied for 19 unanswered points in the final 16:02 minutes, but fell just short of staging their biggest upset of this century. The Eagles (1-2, 0-1) were undone by a school-record 18 penalties, a missed PAT kick and an errant PAT pass in a 31-29 loss to No. 3 ranked Florida State University (3-0, 1-0) before 41,383 on Saturday at Alumni Stadium. The Vegas oddsmakers had BC a 24.5-point underdog at game time. The record 18th infraction was a 15-yard facemask penalty that gave the Seminoles the first down they needed to run out the clock. The previous record of 17 was set against Tennessee on Nov. 5, 1988. BC plays its first road game next Saturday at Louisville.“I think we just ran out of time with the facemask penalty got us at the end,” said BC linebacker Kam Arnold. “I think we just ran out of time and we have a really good football team.”BC sophomore quarterback Thomas Castellanos established himself as one the prominent dual threat ACC signal callers wit...

Cambridge City Council asked to oppose ‘Copy City’ in Atlanta, 1 thousand miles away

Cambridge City Council asked to oppose ‘Copy City’ in Atlanta, 1 thousand miles away Though it may be a thousand miles away, Cambridge community members are calling on the City Council to oppose supporting the construction of the Atlanta Public Safety Training Center “or any similar facilities, in any way.”A policy order in front of the City Council would put it on record in opposition to the Cambridge Police Department sending trainees to, or participating in any collaborations with, the facility being built to primarily serve Atlanta public safety personnel.Several Cambridge community members, in emails to councilors and at a meeting last week, have voiced concerns over how the new facility, dubbed by critics as ‘Cop City,’ would lead to environmental harm and make officers trained there “more violent.”The $90 million center, being constructed on 85 acres in Atlanta’s South River Forest, has drawn wide criticism from environmental, racial and safety justice advocates.“Any officers sent to the proposed Cop City would be trained to be more violent, more militaristic...

Ground attack helps St. John’s Prep nip Central Catholic in 30-28 thriller DANVERS — Sometimes, a little execution in situational football can mean everything. With that, plus a dominant effort on the ground from its two-headed monster at running back, St. John’s Prep earned a 30-28 win over Central Catholic on Saturday at Glatz Field. The sequence in question came at the end of the first half. Central (0-2) held a 14-13 lead, but the Prep (2-0) was driving. The Eagles moved out in front when Prep quarterback Deacon Robillard hit running back Dylan Aliberti for a 30-yard touchdown over the middle. The Eagles were not done. Defensive back Grayson Ambrosh made a nice interception and run back to put the ball at the Central 15. Kicker Langdon Laws then drilled a 32-yard field goal with two seconds left in the half. That gave Prep a 23-14 lead at the break.“It’s the difference in the game. We won by two, that field goal (was the difference),” Prep coach Brian St. Pierre said. “We shouldn’t have put ourselves in that situation. ...

Republican candidates skipping over New Hampshire to in favor of Iowa

Republican candidates skipping over New Hampshire to in favor of Iowa MANCHESTER, N.H. — Once upon a time, the moderates, the mavericks and the underdogs in presidential politics had a chance to break through in New Hampshire.Former Sen. John McCain, an independent-minded Republican, resurrected his anemic campaign with a victory in the state’s first-in-the-nation presidential primary in 2008. Bill Clinton, a centrist Democrat from Arkansas, became the “comeback kid” by exceeding expectations here in 1992. And little-known Georgia peanut farmer, Jimmy Carter, would go on to claim the presidency after winning the state’s 1976 Democratic primary. But this year, New Hampshire’s primary tradition may be little more than a fairy tale as the presidential field largely overlooks the Granite State.Democratic officials, who have rallied behind President Joe Biden, have already decided to bypass New Hampshire in favor of South Carolina. And the crowded Republican field is focusing its money, time and attention on Iowa, betting big that the Midw...

Post-tropical cyclone Lee makes landfall in Nova Scotia, spares Massachusetts Massachusetts was spared the worst of Lee Saturday as the National Hurricane Center downgraded the storm to a post-tropical cyclone early in the day and Gov. Maura Healey lifted a state of emergency declared just before its arrival.Lee made landfall later in Nova Scotia with maximum sustained winds of 70 miles per hour, according to a 5 p.m. update from the National Hurricane Center. Strong winds, coastal flooding, and heavy rains  occurred in portions of Maine and Atlantic Canada, according to the center. But Boston and much of Massachusetts appeared to be in the relative clear as the post-tropical cyclone moved further north, National Weather Service Meteorologist Rob Megnia said. Boston experienced sub-tropical storm force winds, with an early morning gust recorded at Logan Airport reaching 38 mph.“It’s still pretty windy and breezy but it’s really nothing more than a kind of a poor New England weather type of day today,” Megnia said. “We’ll start to see the nort...

Volume up: San Diego musicians collaborate to revive songs of the 'mystic saints of India' SAN DIEGO --Described as a sublime meeting of East and West, a sacred "love story" is being told within the walls of Big Fish Recording Studio in Encinitas.Though produced in the same studio where multi-platinum albums by iconic artists like Blink 182 and Jimmy Eat World were created, a different kind of masterpiece is being collaborated by a group of San Diego musicians. Inspired by the sounds of her childhood, Vineetha Menon, a North County business owner and creator, pointed to her time in Kerala, India while drawing in a breath of creativity. She explained that "compositions from the mystic saints of India" are being retold through an album that's in the making.According to Vineetha, most of the recreated songs on the album are not available in the public domain. Many come from her memory -- an evocation of her mother's singing. "Exquisite melodies and poetic lyrics" she hopes to revive. "Something within me spoke to say it was my responsibility, my duty to preserve this music,"...
