August means vacation time for many in the D.C. region. But going out of town can be easier said than done when you have a four-legged friend at home — even if that friend isn’t a dog.“Cats are creatures of habit. We have all heard that saying, and it is so true,” said Dr. Laura Mosoriak with the Kingstowne Cat Clinic in Alexandria, Virginia.Mosoriak owns the clinic, which has been around since the early 1990s, and has a loyal customer base in the Northern Virginia area. The longtime veterinarian told WTOP that, in her opinion, a licensed and insured sitter is a pet owner’s best option while leaving their cats at home.“I prefer pet sitters to come to the house,” Mosoriak said. “They usually have more skills in being able to recognize when something is wrong.”Kingstowne Cat Clinic’s resident cat is 2-year-old Mike. He was rescued as a kitten, and had an infection that cost him one of his eyes. He loves treats, and provides stress relief to everyone in the prac...Dodgers’ Buehler faces live hitters for 1st time in latest step from surgery rehab

PHOENIX (AP) — Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Walker Buehler faced live batters Wednesday for the first time since having arm surgery more than a year ago.The 29-year-old right-hander is trying to return from his second ligament replacement operation, which he underwent last August. He had his first Tommy John surgery in 2015, just after the Dodgers selected him in the first round of the MLB draft.“It was good to get out there,” Buehler said of his outing at the Dodgers’ nearby Camelback Ranch facility, where the team holds spring training. “It was fine. Never going to be perfect the first time out there. Made some good pitches, and some bad ones.”Dodgers manager Dave Roberts liked what he saw.“It went really well. Much better than I expected. He used his entire pitch mix,” Roberts said before the game against the Diamondbacks. “Everything looked crisp. It was encouraging. (His fastball) was 92 to 93 mph, the cutter was 90, so the velocity was better than I expected.”Buehler’s 2022 sea...Weston Wilson had nearly 2,900 minor league at-bats. HENDERSON, Nev. (AP) — The idea of a walk-on at Purdue slowly rising to become a starting quarterback is enough of a long shot. Forget getting taken in the fourth round of this year’s NFL draft. That’s Aidan O’Connell’s story so far, one the Las Vegas Raiders rookie hopes won’t end any time soon.“I think you have to have a proper balance of reflection and also understanding I’m trying to play more football,” O’Connell said after practice Wednesday. “I don’t want that to be my story — just getting here. I want to work as hard as I can to stay.”O’Connell has been taking snaps behind starter Jimmy Garoppolo and 15-year veteran Brian Hoyer, both of whom had experience in coach Josh McDaniels’ system when he was the New England Patriots’ offensive coordinator. The Raiders signed Garoppolo in the offseason, and under typical circumstances, this season would be one for O’Connell to learn from two experienced QBs. But Garoppolo...Ecuadorian presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio shot and killed at campaign event

By REBECCA BOONE (Associated Press)Follow live updates about wildfires that are racing across part of Maui in Hawaii, destroying sections of a historic town on the island and forcing some to flee to the relative safety of the ocean, where the Coast Guard rescued them. The fires forced evacuations in some areas, including the popular tourist spot of Lahaina Town. The National Weather Service says Hurricane Dora, which is passing south of the island chain at a safe distance, was partly to blame for strong winds driving the flames, knocking out power and grounding firefighting helicopters. President Joe Biden said in a statement Wednesday evening that he has ordered “all available Federal assets” to help combat wildfires that have devastated parts of the Hawaiian island of Maui, killing at least six people. The president said the Coast Guard and Navy are supporting response and rescue efforts, while the Marines are providing Black Hawk helicopters to fight the fires.
