HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — Rhonda Hicks could have kept working into her 60s. She loved teaching and loved her students in Philadelphia’s public schools. As a Black woman, she took pride in being a role model for many children of color.But other aspects of the job deteriorated, such as growing demands from administrators over what and how to teach. And when she retires in a few weeks, she will join a disproportionately high number of Black and Hispanic teachers in her state who are leaving the profession.“I enjoy actually teaching, that part I’ve always enjoyed,” said Hicks, 59. “Sometimes it’s a little stressful. Sometimes the kids can be difficult. But it’s the higher-ups: ‘Do it this way or don’t do it at all.’”Teachers are leaving jobs in growing numbers, state reports show. Man found dead inside barrel at Malibu beach identified

Officials with the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner have identified the body of a man discovered dead inside a 55-gallon drum in Malibu Lagoon on Monday.  The victim has been identified as 32-year-old Javonnta Murphy. A park maintenance worker first saw the barrel floating in the water near the Pacific Coast Highway bridge on Sunday night, and when they tried to drag it to shore, it was too heavy, so they left it in the water.  When a lifeguard arrived at work on Monday and spotted the barrel around 10 a.m., they swam to retrieve it. That’s when they made the gruesome discovery, according to LASD. “It didn’t look decomposed or like it had been there for a long time,” said Lt. Hugo Raynaga. Authorities also added that the high tide may have carried the barrel into the lagoon from the ocean.  The body was found inside a 55-gallon plastic drum in Malibu Lagoon. ‘Missing & exploited children’ group joins search for missing L.A. girl, 12

The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children is boosting efforts to find a 12-year-old girl from San Pedro who disappeared in mid-July.Isabella Poland left her home around 4:20 p.m. on July 15, according to Los Angeles Police.Several days later, she was captured on surveillance video at the Montclair Place shopping mall, roughly 50 miles from her home, with an unknown male.Isabella’s mom, Linda Poland, told NCMEC that her family is heartbroken.Isabella Poland (Los Angeles Police Department)“Isabella, we love you and need you home. Santa Clara man charged in series of South Bay burglaries

PALO ALTO – A 23-year-old Santa Clara man is facing multiple criminal charges in connection with a series of residential burglaries between last fall and spring in Palo Alto, police said.The burglaries occurred Oct. 22 in the 700 block of Rosewood Drive, Oct. 28 in the 4000 block of Briarwood Way, Feb. 16 in the 3600 block of Ramona Street, March 22 in the 700 block of Talisman Court and May 2 in the 1400 block of Byron Street.An investigation led to the identification of the man as one of the suspects, the Palo Alto Police Department said in a news release Tuesday. On July 20, detectives obtained a probable cause warrant charging him with five felony counts of residential burglary.On the same day detectives obtained the warrant, they learned the man had been arrested on unrelated charges by the Santa Clara Police Department and was in custody, police said. Fatal Sonoma crash involves 4 vehicles
