KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Sonny Gray made it through five scoreless innings on Saturday. But it was anything but smooth for the veteran starter. After a quick seven-pitch first inning, he faced traffic in the final four frames of his start in a game the Twins would go on to win 2-0 over the Royals at Kauffman Stadium. Some of that was his own doing.“Didn’t have great stuff and didn’t have good command at all,” Gray said. “It just felt a tick off.”So it came as somewhat of a gift in the third inning when, after walking the bases loaded, Royals designated hitter Franmil Reyes was rung up for a pitch-clock violation for not being ready in time, which caused an automatic strike to be added to the count. All of a sudden, in the biggest moment of his start, Gray’s job suddenly became easier through nothing of his own doing.“It’s 0-1 and you can start expanding the zone a little earlier than maybe you would have,” Gray said. “He saw one less pitch throughout that. … It worked out on our side, so it...China’s Ruoning Yin opens 2-shot lead in LPGA Tour’s LA Open

HOUSTON (AP) — FAU’s debut at the Final Four ended in the most excruciating manner imaginable. The Owls led for the last 27 minutes, 25 seconds of Saturday night’s game against San Diego State, only to watch their dream of a title become a nightmare when Lamont Butler’s jumper went through the net at the buzzer to give the Aztecs a 72-71 victory. The Owls made school history by getting here, only to walk off the court in shock as the Aztecs bounced around in celebration. “I was in shock when the buzzer went off,” said FAU’s Nick Boyd.Florida Atlantic’s players smiled and many danced on the bench during a second half in which it appeared they’d move within one win of a title no one could have seen coming. Instead they ended up with a loss that nobody will ever forget. Butler’s shot goes into the March Madness annals, alongside Jalen Suggs’ long-range buzzer-beater for Gonzaga two years ago in the national semifinal, and even something that happened on this very floor the last ti...Latest news
