The many lives of tomato pie

By Mari Uyehara, The New York TimesOn the website for Frank Pepe Pizzeria Napoletana in New Haven, Connecticut, ordering the “Original Tomato Pie” is accompanied by a warning: “By selecting this, you are acknowledging that this pie has no Mozzarella on it.”In New Haven apizza nomenclature, the tomato pie, also known as a plain pie, is a thin-crust pizza blistered in a coal-fired oven and then covered with a thin layer of sauce and a sprinkling of grated Pecorino Romano.New Haven might be best known for its white clam pizzas, but the heartbeat of the city just might be the humble but mighty tomato pie.Jennifer Kelly, one of Frank Pepe’s granddaughters, estimates that 75% to 80% of the tables she served before retiring ordered it. “That’s my favorite pie,” she said. “It is the pie that my grandfather started. It was a pie that I was raised on. It’s simple. And it’s just delicious.”While America has gone wild with pizza toppings, the tomato pie’s allure is in its focus. People will duck under desks and tables in California and around the world on Thursday for an annual drill practicing ways to stay safe during earthquakes.Up and down the West Coast, the ShakeOut drill was scheduled to begin at 10:19 a.m. PDT with a cellphone-rattling test alert from the region's ShakeAlert earthquake warning system. New research gives insight into why the ‘Big One’ hasn’t hit Los Angeles yet For many it would be the second alert of the day, following an errant predawn message that hit some phones with a voice message announcing the test. The U.S. Geological Survey said it was likely due to a mix-up in time zones set in the test alert system. The real thing happened a day earlier, however, when a magnitude 4.2 quake struck southwest of California's capital in the agricultural Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta region. The tremor triggered a warning from the ShakeAlert system, which detects the start of a quake and sends warnings to areas expected to experience shak...Alleged copper thieves arrested in Milpitas

Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) will back a resolution to empower Speaker Pro Tempore Patrick McHenry (R-N.C.) as he continues to work to shore up support for his Speaker bid, according to a source familiar. The move comes after Jordan failed on two ballots to get the 217 votes he needed to win the gavel and opponents were promising greater resistance. But it’s unclear whether a vote to empower McHenry will pass muster on the House floor. While the push to expand McHenry’s power has been growing this week, several conservative Republicans on Thursday came out strongly against doing so. Whether Jordan’s endorsement of the idea moves them — and whether Democrats may be willing to make up for any GOP defections — remains the key question. The resolution would broadly grant McHenry the same powers as an elected Speaker, but it would only leave him in the role until January, and he would not be in the line of presidential succession. Jordan is not dropping out of the race and will remain the...Suspected Santa Rosa fentanyl dealer arrested after search warrant

BRATISLAVA, Slovakia (AP) — Slovakia’s president announced Thursday that she is postponing the appointment of a new Cabinet following last month’s parliamentary election because she cannot accept the nomination of a person who doesn’t believe in the threat of climate change as environment minister.Liberal President Zuzana Caputova said Rudolf Huliak, who was nominated by the ultranationalist and pro-Russian Slovak National Party, could not ensure the proper functioning of the ministry because he opposes the government’s long-term environmental policies and Slovakia’s international obligations.“A candidate who has not recognized the scientific consensus on climate change and asserts no real climate crisis exists cannot be in charge and represent a ministry whose main role is the protection of nature, landscape and the Earth’s climate system,” Caputova said in a statement. She also mentioned Huliak’s advocacy of violence against environmentalists as a reason not to sw...In high-stakes election for control of Virginia General Assembly, what role will Northern Virginia play?

With just a few weeks to go, the high-stakes election that will decide whether Democrats or Republicans control the Virginia General Assembly, remains basically a dead heat.Heading into Election Day on Nov. 7, Republicans hold a narrow majority in the 100-seat House of Delegates (50-46, with four vacancies) and Democrats maintain a similarly narrow majority in the 40-seat State Senate (22-18).Every seat is on the ballot — and polls show the end result is up for grabs by either party.“What you see across the commonwealth is really very much a 50-50 contest,” said Stephen Farnsworth, professor of political science at the University of Mary Washington, and a longtime Virginia state politics watcher.Virginia voter guide: What you need to know for the 2023 general electionIn Virginia, with so many districts falling into either solidly-blue Democratic or reliably-red Republican territory, there are only a handful of tossup seats in both the House and the Senate across the entire sta...After scoring goals for France, Kylian Mbappé needs to start scoring again for PSG

PARIS (AP) — After scoring goals for France in European Championship qualifying, Kylian Mbappé needs to start scoring again for Paris Saint-Germain.Mbappé’s three goals in qualifying this month came against the Netherlands and Scotland, and they helped Les Bleus clinch a spot at Euro 2024. Those goals brought him to 43 for the national team at the age of only 24. That’s already two more than France great Michel Platini, with only Olivier Giroud (54), Thierry Henry (51) and Antoine Griezmann (44) left ahead of him.But after scoring eight goals in his first five games for PSG this season, Mbappé has not found the net in the past four. He was ineffective, too, when PSG lost to Newcastle 4-1 in the Champions League two weeks ago.PSG coach Luis Enrique might choose to rest Mbappé in the French league on Saturday against Strasbourg because the club has a big game against AC Milan in the Champions League on Wednesday. But with PSG in third place and two points behind leader Mona...Union Pacific railroad’s quarterly profit falls 19% as volumes slow and costs remain high

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Union Pacific’s third-quarter profit fell 19% as the railroad hauled fewer shipments and costs remained high, but the average speed of its trains improved 5% as new CEO Jim Vena began to tweak the operations. The Omaha, Nebraska, railroad earned $1.53 billion, or $2.51 per share, during the quarter, That’s down from $1.9 billion, or $3.05 per share.
