MEDFIELD — In a game that saw 32 goals, it was a defensive stand at the end that helped Medfield escape with a 17-15 girls lacrosse victory over King Philip. The hold saw Medfield’s Kelly Blake force a turnover near the goal while the hosts held a slim 16-15 lead. The ensuing play saw them wear out the clock and fire home an insurance marker.“Kelly Blake has nice clean checks,” Medfield coach Mary Laughna said. “She read the girl’s stick well and just got it.”The first half saw 21 goals combined between the teams and four total lead changes. King Philip led for most of the half, taking an early lead and never allowing Medfield to get more than a two-goal advantage. Still, it was Medfield which took an 11-10 lead at the half.“We came out with high energy and we knew how competitive this game was going to be for us.” King Philip coach Kourtnie Wilder said. “It could have gone either way, but I’m really proud of our effort.”King Philip quickly retook the lead in the second half an...Inmate found dead in North County prison cell

SAN DIEGO -- Passengers traveling on Southwest Airlines Tuesday morning were shocked to learn all flights had been halted after a system-wide technical issue.“It happens so often that I’m used to it. I travel quite a bit, so 30-minute delay at this point - knock on wood,” said business traveler Heidi Caella at San Diego International Airport. At about 7 a.m. Tuesday, at the request of Southwest, the Federal Aviation Administration issued a nationwide ground stop for all Southwest flights, citing equipment issues. Southwest issued an apology saying they were working to fix the problem, which had to do with “a data connection issue resulting from a firewall failure.” The FAA canceled the pause about an hour later, but by then thousands of flights had been impacted across the country. Southbound I-805 ramp to I-8 closed for emergency repairs Nearly every flight was delayed on Southwest’s arrival and departure board at Terminal One at San Diego International Airp...Officer testifies at B.C. inquest into man’s death after police beating

BURNABY, B.C. — The first Vancouver police officer to interact with Myles Gray in an altercation that ended in his death told a coroner’s inquest she feared for her safety and called for backup. Const. Hardeep Sahota said she was working alone when she was dispatched to a call about a man who had sprayed a woman with a garden hose. Her testimony marked the first time the public has heard directly from one of the officers involved.Gray, who was 33, died in Burnaby, B.C., in August 2015 after going into cardiac arrest within an hour of a beating by police that left him with injuries including a fractured eye socket, nose and rib, a crushed voice box and a ruptured testicle.Sahota said two other officers who responded to her call for backup followed him into a yard. She said one of the other officers told Gray to get down on the ground, and when he didn’t, that officer deployed pepper spray.Sahota testified that one of her colleagues moved to take custody of Gray, grabbing on...Charles Stanley, influential Baptist preacher, dies at 90

ATLANTA (AP) — Charles Stanley, a prominent televangelist who once led the Southern Baptist Convention, died Tuesday at his home in Atlanta at age 90, In Touch Ministries announced. No cause of death was announced.Born in rural Dry Fork, Virginia, Stanley was senior pastor of First Baptist Church of Atlanta for 50 years. The church grew rapidly after he became its leader in 1971, moving from central Atlanta to a suburban campus in 1997 to accommodate a growing flock in the sprawling urban area.“We are forever grateful for his enduring legacy of faithful leadership and spiritual guidance,” the church said in a social media post. But his greatest fame came from his role in hosting “In Touch with Dr. Charles Stanley,” a Christian teaching program that began airing on the newborn Christian Broadcasting Network in 1978. That led to the creation of a separate nonprofit, In Touch Ministries, that sent Stanley’s broadcasts across the nation and world through radio and television. It eve...Planning a trip? SALEM, Ore. (AP) — Oregon’s pioneering experiment with legalized magic mushrooms took a step closer to reality as the first “facilitators” who will accompany clients as they experience the drug received their state licenses, authorities said Tuesday.Voters approved the regulated use of psilocybin in a 2020 ballot measure, and anticipation has been building over the past 2 1/2 years for the day — expected to come later this year — when people can gain access to the drug that studies indicate has therapeutic value. Hundreds of people have invested thousands of dollars apiece in this budding industry, and some worry that the rollout is proceeding too slowly. “We thank you for your dedication to client safety and access as we move closer to opening service centers,” Oregon Psilocybin Services Manager Angie Allbee said in a statement Tuesday to three people who received the state’s first facilitator licenses. But to date, no service centers — where customers would access...‘Be skeptical’: Toronto police warn of ongoing pizza delivery scam

Toronto police are warning of an ongoing pizza delivery scam following several reports of victims being frauded by fake drivers.Authorities say a dark-coloured vehicle with a Domino’s Pizza sign has been sighted in large retail store parking lots. It’s alleged a female suspect poses as a customer and a male suspect poses as the delivery driver.A female suspect approaches the victim, asking for help paying for the pizza delivery fee with a debit card, claiming the driver is not accepting cash.Police said the victim is convinced to help by letting the female suspect use their debit card to pay for the pizza in exchange for receiving cash. The target is then taken over to the fake pizza delivery vehicle, where they provide the male suspect with their debit card. A PIN will then be entered into a modified point-of-sale terminal that records the PIN and debit card information. After the successful transaction, the victim is given a different bank card that resembles theirs. NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Tennessee Rep. Justin Pearson never guessed he’d be expelled for leading a gun control protest on the House floor after a deadly school shooting. Nor did he predict that he’d be propelled into the national spotlight, placing his state at the forefront of the conversation on gun regulations.Activism had yielded results for years for the 28-year-old son of a preacher and a teacher. At age 15, he prodded a school board to get his Memphis high school more textbooks. After college, he fought a planned oil pipeline through wetlands and poor, predominantly Black neighborhoods in the city’s south. The project was canceled in 2021.The push to boot Pearson and two other Democrats has kept national attention fixed on reliably Republican Tennessee. They hope the pressure from thousands of students, parents and others who have protested at the Capitol for gun control can yield quick change. GOP Gov. Bill Lee has called for legislation to keep firearms away fro...After Alabama birthday shooting, hope and frustration

DADEVILLE, Ala (AP) — Three days after gunfire at a Sweet 16 birthday party killed four young people and injured 32 more, some critically, victims’ relatives and officials expressed hope that investigators may be nearing an arrest and also frustration about police silence on the status of the case. The shootings Saturday night rocked the small town of Dadeville, about 80 miles (130 kilometers) southeast of Birmingham, and families suddenly found themselves planning memorials and burial services instead of graduation parties or college move-ins. A relative of one teen killed in the shooting told The Associated Press on Tuesday that the family hopes authorities will catch someone soon. “They are working very hard and are adamant about apprehending those who are responsible for the tragic event,” said Amy Jackson, whose cousin KeKe Smith was among the dead. Dadeville Mayor Frank Goodman said police had established a new command center behind a church, but it was not immediately clear i...Latest news
