Pentagon Fails Sixth Audit in a Row, Claiming “Progress Sort of Beneath the Surface”

The U.S. military appears unfazed in its inability to account for billions of dollars. On Thursday, the Department of Defense failed its sixth consecutive audit — but hailed its “incremental progress.”As the Pentagon budget nears a watershed $1 trillion — the largest of any federal government agency — it has never passed a single one of the annual audits mandated by Congress. In a press briefing, the Department of Defense said it had no timeline for passing an audit.“We’ve heard the same platitudes about audit progress for years,” said Julia Gledhill, an analyst at the Project on Government Oversight’s Center for Defense Information. “They’re meaningless, especially since the Pentagon can’t even commit to a timeline for achieving a clean audit.”“We’ve heard the same platitudes about audit progress for years. They’re meaningless.”Former Pentagon comptroller Thomas Harker, now the secretary of the Navy, had publicly set a deadline of 2027 for a clean audit...The RSM Classic Scores

ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. (AP) — Ludvig Aberg had a pair of two-putt birdies, one of them on a par 4, and kept bogeys off his card for the second straight day for a 6-under 64 on Friday to take a one-shot lead into the weekend at the RSM Classic. In the final tournament of the longest PGA Tour season, Aberg will try to end his short year with victories on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean. He already won the European Masters in Switzerland, a performance that secured his spot on Europe’s winning Ryder Cup team. Not bad for a 24-year-old Swede who only turned pro in June. Not surprising, either.“I know my capabilities and I know my strengths,” said Aberg, who finished at Texas Tech this spring and earned a PGA Tour card as the No. 1 player in the PGA Tour University ranking. “But also, to be able to do it this quickly, probably not. It’s been so much fun.“I still pinch myself in the morning whenever I wake up that I actually get to do this for a living, but it’s really cool and...Judge orders Las Vegas high schoolers held on no bail in classmate’s deadly beating

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Four of the eight Las Vegas high school students accused of beating their schoolmate to death in a brawl captured on cellphone video made their first appearances Friday in the adult court system. In separate hearings, the two 16-year-olds and two 17-year-olds were ordered to remain held without bail until their next court date on Tuesday, at which time the judge assigned to the case may reconsider granting bail. The students each face one count of murder but have not been formally charged, court records show. The Associated Press is not naming them because they are juveniles. The other four suspects are awaiting separate hearings since they are all under the age of 16.Earlier this week, Las Vegas police announced the arrests of the eight students, between the ages of 13 and 17, in connection with the Nov. 1 brawl that left 17-year-old Jonathan Lewis Jr. dead.Authorities have said students at Rancho High School in eastern Las Vegas had agreed to meet after school let ou...Teen sentenced to 30 years for killing 17-year-old in Brighton park

A suspect linked to the attempted murder of a Miami Beach security guard has been apprehended in Texas and returned to face charges in Miami-Dade County.Surveillance footage from Oct. 22, obtained by 7News, captured the crucial audio of gunshots targeted at the victim along the 900 block of Collins Avenue. Miami Beach detectives utilized the footage by Sherbrooke Hotel owner Mitch Novick to identify Dontayvious Roberts, linking him to the incident.Speaking with 7News on Friday, Novick said he was jolted out of bed by the sound of the gunshots.“I heard the gunfire, I woke up, I took note of the time,” he said. What Novick heard was the moment the security guard came under fire just up the street.Detectives said surveillance stills captured the beginning of the crime. They said the suspect was seen running toward the victim while he went for a gun in his waistband before shots were fired. The arrest warrant states Roberts had parked his car nearby and was told he couldn̵...Red Cross helping family displaced after abandoned structure collapses in Miami as cleanup continues

Cleanup efforts continued in a Miami neighborhood, days after the collapse of an abandoned building left the family living next door without a place to call home when debris pierced through their roof.Pile by pile, what was left of the crumbled building was scooped up and carried away on Friday. The abandoned structure was no match for heavy rain and wind that caused problems Wednesday night.Surveillance cameras captured the moment it came crumbling down. Some pieces came through the roof of Nicole Ojeda’s family home.“Yeah, I was sleeping, and then a loud noise, and when we go open the backroom, one of the bedrooms, the ceiling was caved in, and my younger brother was in there,” she said. Her brother was OK, but their home now has a huge hole in the roof. A sign now reads “unsafe structure” on the front. Volunteers with the American Red Cross were seen with the family on Friday to assess the damage and try to determine what’s next. Also nearby, longtime Miami-D...Latest news
