SEATTLE — The Seattle Mariners were hoping rookie starter Bryan Woo from Alameda could make it into the fifth inning against the Oakland A’s Monday night. Woo, still on a limited pitch count after missing time this month with forearm inflammation, bettered anything the Mariners could have hoped, scattering three hits over six innings in Seattle’s 7-0 win.Woo struck out five and needed just 69 pitches to match his longest career outing as he led Seattle to its 13th shutout this season, tied for second with Cleveland and two back of Atlanta.Oakland, meanwhile, was shut out for the 14th time.“I’m always trying to be efficient. I’m always trying to go deeper into games,” said Woo, who improved to 2-3. “I think I’ve done a much better job of it the last couple of weeks, going deeper and kind of giving our bullpen a little bit more of a break.”Things were much rougher for A’s starter Kyle Muller (1-5), who started for the first time since July 1, having made his last two appearances...One arrested in connection with Santa Clara eatery stabbing

___Kim says North Korea must be ready against US-led invasion plots after US, allies start new drills

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — North Korean leader Kim Jong Un called for his military to be constantly ready for combat to thwart its rivals’ plots to invade his country, state media said Tuesday, as the U.S., South Korea and Japan held a trilateral naval exercise to deal with North Korea’s evolving nuclear threats. The U.S. and South Korean militaries have been separately holding summer bilateral exercises since last week. North Korea views such U.S.-involved training as an invasion rehearsal, though Washington and its partners maintain their drills are defensive. Kim said in a speech marking the country’s Navy Day on Monday that the waters off the Korean Peninsula have been made unstable “with the danger of a nuclear war” because of U.S.-led hostilities, according to the official Korean Central News Agency. He accused the U.S. of conducting “more frantic” naval drills with its allies and deploying strategic assets in waters around the Korean Peninsula. Kim also cited a recent U.S.-Sout...UK says a cyberattack was not the cause of air traffic problems that snarled flights

LONDON (AP) — The British government said Tuesday that a breakdown at the nationwide air traffic control system that saw hundreds of flights delayed and canceled was not caused by a cyberattack.Transport Secretary Mark Harper said the problem was caused by a “technical fault” at flight control operator National Air Traffic Services. The company said the outage had hit its ability to process flight plans automatically, meaning that for several hours the plans had to be input manually, a much slower process that meant fewer flights could take off and land.Harper told the BBC that “it is going to take some days to get people back to where they should be.”The problem hit on a late-summer holiday Monday that is one of the busiest days of the year for air travel. Aviation analytics firm Cirium said that by Monday afternoon, 232 flights due to leave U.K. airports and 271 arriving flights had been canceled.Dozens of flights were canceled at Heathrow, Europe’s busiest air hub, which warned o...London’s plan to charge drivers of polluting cars sparks protests and stirs political passions

LONDON (AP) — London’s traffic cameras are under attack. Police say hundreds of license plate-reading cameras have been damaged, disconnected or stolen by opponents of an anti-pollution charge on older vehicles that comes into force across the metropolis on Tuesday. The vandalism by vigilantes calling themselves the Blade Runners shows that emotions are running high over the city’s Ultra Low Emission Zone. London’s mayor says the measure will cut air pollution that is linked to about 4,000 deaths a year in the British capital. Critics say it’s a cash grab that will penalize suburban residents who depend on their cars for work and essential travel.“The cameras are going to keep coming down,” predicted Nick Arlett, who has organized protests against the clean-air charge and says he neither condones nor condemns the sabotage “People are angry.”Moves in the U.K. to cut air pollution and reduce car use have become a political flashpoint. Supporters say cynical politicians and conspiracy t...Sudan’s military leader travels to Egypt in his first trip abroad since the war

CAIRO (AP) — Sudan’s top miliary officer is traveling to Egypt on Tuesday on his first trip abroad since the country plunged into a bitter conflict this year, authorities said.Gen. Abdel-Fattah Burhan, chairman of the ruling Sovereign Council, was expected to hold talks with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi on the latest developments in Sudan, the council said in a statement.Sudan plunged into chaos in mid-April when simmering tensions between the military, led by Burhan, and the powerful paramilitary, Rapid Support Forces, commanded by Mohammed Hamdan Dagalo, exploded into open fighting in the capital, Khartoum, and elsewhere. The conflict has reduced the capital to an urban battlefield, with the RSF controlling vast swaths of the city. The military command, where Burhan has purportedly been stationed since April, has been one of the epicenters of the conflict.Burhan managed last week to leave the military headquarters, where he has been stationed since the breakout of the c...Increase in road freight transport as of 2021
