Why dengue in Europe could spell disaster for the rest of the world

Why dengue in Europe could spell disaster for the rest of the world  In the early morning of the last day of August, Parisians experienced for the first time a practice normally confined to tropical regions — authorities fumigating the city against the tiger mosquito. The event was a tangible confirmation of what public health stats already showed: Dengue, the deadly mosquito-borne disease, had well and truly arrived in Europe. In 2022, Europe saw more cases of locally acquired dengue than in the whole of the previous decade. The rise marks both a public health threat and a corresponding market opportunity for dengue vaccines and treatments; news that should spur the pharma industry to boost investment into the neglected disease. On the face of it, this shift would appear to benefit not only countries like France but also nations like Bangladesh and the Philippines that have long battled dengue. But that assumption could be fatally flawed, experts told POLITICO. People working in the field say the rise of dengue in the West could, in fa...

Few showers today, sun returns this weekend Good morning! A few showers will be here throughout the day, and it’ll feel cooler. We’re starting off in the 50s, and a lot of clouds will keep temperatures in the low 60s this afternoon. Rain is still here tomorrow, mainly for areas south. Then we’ll have improving conditions the rest of the weekend. Here’s our weather setup. A stream of moisture is getting pulled north. An area of low pressure will strengthen to our south as it interacts with a low moving in from the west. This low pressure will be slow to move out of here and continue to promote showers into tomorrow.Keep the rain gear nearby! Showers favor the west this morning into midday. A few showers develop inland later on. Heavy rain and flash flooding concerns are elevated for western Connecticut into the New York Metro. Overnight temperatures fall into the 50s. Shower chances increase for our region. Rain favors the first half of the day tomorrow. It’ll be steadiest the farther south you are...

As Kyle Hendricks prepares for a pivotal start tonight, weak contact is the basis of his success for the Chicago Cubs

As Kyle Hendricks prepares for a pivotal start tonight, weak contact is the basis of his success for the Chicago Cubs The day before Kyle Hendricks’ final regular-season start, the Chicago Cubs’ veteran tried to recall the last time he took the mound for such a pivotal game so late into the 162-game schedule.Hendricks figures it came in September 2019 when the Cubs tried to lock down a playoff spot, going from 14 games over .500 and in the final wild-card position with two weeks to go to missing the postseason thanks to a stretch of losing nine consecutive games. After a disastrous three-game sweep in Atlanta, the Cubs turn to Hendricks with their postseason hopes on life support Friday in Milwaukee, where they close out their regular-season slate.“This is what you play for,” Hendricks told the Tribune on Thursday. “You want to be winning and you’re in this game for one reason, and it’s to win. And so to have a group like this where you’re so close and to be able to win with them makes it even more special. To be in it now, we’re focused...

German opposition leader faces criticism for comments on dental care for migrants BERLIN (AP) — Germany’s conservative opposition leader has drawn strong government criticism for suggesting that migrants are getting expensive dental treatment at the expense of established residents.Friedrich Merz, who leads the center-right Christian Democratic Union, assailed the government’s approach to immigration in an appearance Wednesday on Welt television.
