CHICAGO — Emergency crews have responded to a house fire at 69th and Rockwell in Chicago Lawn. SkyCam9 flew above the scene. Details are limited, but SkyCam9 shows a house engulfed, with heavy smoke from the roof area. CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (WNCN) — For more than three hours, the UNC-Chapel Hill campus was placed on a lockdown due to an active shooter situation. University of North Carolina Chancellor Kevin M. Guskiewicz confirmed a faculty member was shot and killed in a campus building. Their identity was not released as police are still in the process of contacting family members. CHICAGO — A 20-year-old man was fatally shot during an attempted robbery on the city's Far South Side.Family members have identified the 20-year-old victim as Daemond Russell.The shooting happened around 12:15 a.m. Monday on the 1600 block of East 95th Street in the South Deering neighborhood. Police said the 20-year-old was approached by a male offender who was attempting to rob him.According to a witness, Russell tried to get away in his vehicle and was shot in the head by the offender. He was transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. WASHINGTON (WDCW) -- The killing of a 16-year-old girl from Maryland took place after she and her accused murderer fought over sweet and sour dipping sauce, a detective with the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) said.Det. Brendan Jasper testified at the arraignment of the 16-year-old girl whom police arrested for the alleged murder of Naima Liggon. Jasper said the teenagers met three other people in Oxon Hill, Maryland, then drove to D.C. to go to a party on Sunday. A reduction in available permits for paddlers entering the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness helped reduce the overall number of visitors in 2022, according to data recently released from the Superior National Forest.Nearly 151,000 people entered the northeastern Minnesota federal wilderness in 2022, down 9% from 166,000 people in 2021 — the second summer of the pandemic and the recent peak in total visitors.The drop in visitors coincides with the 13% reduction in available permits for 2022 after the 2020 and 2021 rush to get outdoors.
