The FBI’s sprawling investigation into widespread corruption across the Antioch and Pittsburg police departments led to the indictment of 10 people on Thursday, marking one of the Bay Area’s largest and most searing policing scandals in recent memory.Nine police officers — five Antioch cops and four from Pittsburg — and one Antioch community service officer were named in four indictments alleging years of suspected misdeeds across East Contra Costa County. The allegations were remarkably varied, including everything from alleged college credit scams to steroid distribution to racially motivated police brutality laid out in unabashedly bigoted text messages. Here’s a rundown of the four types of cases being brought by the U.S. Attorney for the Northern District California:‘Hopefully you get a bite’: Civil rights charges allege brutal tacticsAntioch officers Morteza Amiri, Devon Wenger and Eric Rombough are accused of plotting violence against ...Oakland school board hopefuls stunned to learn they’re ineligible: ‘This is outrageous’

OAKLAND — The candidates running for an Oakland school board seat this November were aware of the stakes: Winning the race would give one of them unique sway over the district’s future via a crucial swing vote on the often-deadlocked board. But what they were stunned to learn Thursday is that, due to an error by the city clerk’s office in setting the voting boundaries, neither is in fact eligible to run for the seat — and it’s possible there won’t be an election at all.City officials were scrambling to figure out on Thursday how to remedy the screw-up after it was pointed out to them by one of this news organization’s opinion columnists. It is just the latest election debacle to play out in Oakland, a city that in the past year has been plagued by an incorrectly called school board race, controversy around the ranked-choice voting rules in the mayoral election and inaccurate filing deadlines for candidates.“Hopefully it’s not impos...72-acre South Bay brush fire impacts traffic on US-101

COSTA MESA, Calif. (AP) — Even though Derek Carr continues to get acclimated playing for his new team, Thursday seemed like old times for the veteran quarterback.Carr was back on the West Coast and going against an AFC West defense as the New Orleans Saints and Los Angeles Chargers went through the first of two days of joint practices.“This is a great group to compete against. They’ve got some great defensive backs and schematically they match up well,” said Carr, who signed with the Saints during the offseason. “I thought we got to work on some tight window throws.”The practice ended up being a mixed bag of results for Carr and the first team offense. Receivers Chris Olave and Michael Thomas made some nice catches, but Carr often found himself under pressure as the offensive line had trouble containing edge rushers Khalil Mack and Joey Bosa.Carr played one series in last Sunday’s preseason opener against Kansas City, but he considers the joint workouts to be more beneficial.“In the...Top seeds Alcaraz and Swiatek overcome adversity to advance to the quarterfinals at W&S

MASON, Ohio (AP) — Carlos Alcaraz and Iga Swiatek, the top-ranked players in tennis, got past adverse weather conditions and challenging opponents on Thursday to reach the Western & Southern Open quarterfinals.Alcaraz overcame two rain delays totaling 2 hours, 35 minutes and 14th-seeded American Tommy Paul, who beat him last Friday in Toronto, for a 7-6 (6), 6-7 (0), 6-3 win in a match that lasted 3 hours, 9 minutes.“You’ve got to stay focused,” said Alcaraz, the defending U.S. Open champion and this year’s Wimbledon titlist from Spain. “It’s not easy to play and stop and play and stop. You can’t do anything but be ready to play.”Alcaraz recovered after losing three match points during the 12th game of the second set, which lasted 24 points and more than 15 minutes. Blanked in the tiebreaker, he came right back to break Paul’s serve in the first game of the final set.“The main difference is he won and I lost,” Paul said, distinguishing between Thursday and his victory last week....Australia, Sweden still have something to play for in the 3rd place game at the Women’s World Cup

Australia already captivated a nation as co-hosts of the Women’s World Cup. Now there’s one more thing to play for, even if it’s not the fairytale ending the team had wanted for this tournament. The Matildas play Sweden on Saturday for third place in Brisbane. Australia lost 3-1 to England in the semifinals on Wednesday, dashing hopes of playing in the title match. “I know we’ve got the support of everyone, I know that they’re still going to come out to the game against Sweden,” midfielder Katrina Gorry said. “I know they’re always going to have our backs, but yeah, it’s just disappointing. You never want to do that on home soil.” Indeed, the fans came out for the Matildas during their World Cup journey. Bars and restaurants were packed around Sydney and there were live watching parties across the country for the semifinal.
