CLEVELAND (AP) — Mary Lamar had been searching for a job that was a good fit. She worked for a time as a nursing assistant but found it boring. A stint as a shipyard welder ended because she could no longer bear the winter cold. Then Lamar had what she described as a “rift” in her life. That rift led her to plead guilty to robbery in 2019 and to serve time in prison. Now Lamar, who lives in Cleveland, operates a stamping press, churning out thousands of specialty metal washers each day at Talan Products, a local manufacturer.“I’ve always been mechanically inclined,” she said. “My mom told me I should have been an engineer.’’Lamar got her job through a program developed by business and community leaders — with help from philanthropy — to match people of color, women, and formerly incarcerated people with manufacturing jobs.Manufacturers in Cleveland and other cities, including Buffalo, Chicago, and Milwaukee, are dealing with a retiring workforce that’s left thousands of jobs unfilled...Dr. Seuss plaque missing on Mulberry Street

Oregon Zoo curator Travis Koons told Nexstar's KOIN that the western forest scorpion can be found in the western and central half of the Columbia River Gorge and on the south side of Mt. St. Helens.“These are nocturnal animals, and sightings are likely quite rare in the grand scheme of things,” Koons said. “I would not recommend flipping rocks or disturbing rotten stumps unless you are prepared to encounter this or other slightly venomous invertebrates.” Here come the spiders: What to know about Oregon’s emerging creepy-crawlies The western scorpion can also be found on th...Pflugerville ISD offering free meals through summer break

BEL-RIDGE, Mo. - The water was working at Tiffany Shaw’s Bel-Ridge home when FOX 2 visited Thursday morning. After receiving a notice of non-payment warning from Missouri American Water, she’s not sure how much longer that’ll be the case.“The water company comes yesterday and told us that our water is due to get disconnected because there’s a past due bill," Shaw said. "There’s no account at this address.”She and her neighbor, Ivie, said they’ve repeatedly reached out to the property management company, Purpose Residential.“They keep forwarding our calls. They won’t answer our calls. They won’t return any calls," Shaw said. They said Purpose Residential began managing the property after it was sold earlier this year. Under the previous owners, they said they didn’t pay the water bill, and if that’s changed under the new owner, they haven’t been told. A motorcyclist who was considered armed and dangerous led police on a nearly hour-long chase through the west end of the San Fernando Valley Thursday night before eventually being taken into custody. Officers with the Los Angeles Police Department responded to the 23000 block of Windom Street in West Hills at around 5 p.m. on calls of a person suffering a possible mental health condition. “Upon arrival, the officers made contact with the subject who pointed a handgun at officers,” police said. As police set up a containment zone and requested backup, the man left the home’s garage on a motorcycle and took off.On Mullholland Drive, the suspect was clocked traveling at speeds near 70 miles per hour on the windy roadway. At times, the man came to a stop, allowing LAPD units to get close, and when officers stepped out of their vehicles, the suspect sped off again. With the City Council's approval on Thursday, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass has passed her first budget, though not without some controversy. The $13.1 billion budget — 11% more than last year — contains $1.3 billion for combatting homelessness, an investment highlighted by multiple supporters of the budget.“This budget will make Los Angeles more livable for all. It will allow us to confront the emergency of homelessness with the urgency we need and make innovative investments in bold new methods to make our neighborhoods safer," Mayor Karen Bass said in a statement. While the budget received overwhelming support from the council, its largest portion raised concerns from critics, including Councilmember Eunisses Hernandez, who cast the only vote against approval. The Los Angeles Police Department is set to receive $3.2 billion this fiscal year, including funding to replace the 600 or so officers expected to leave or retire and hire 400 new officers on top of that.Hernandez criticized th...Latest news
