The MBTA has announced plans to lift a global speed restriction in place on the Green Line on Saturday, just over a week after the restriction went into effect last Thursday. Though officials said they plan to lift the 25 mile per hour global Green Line restriction, other restrictions will remain in place on sections of tracks across all T lines. MBTA Interim General Manager Jeff Gonneville discussed the changes at a press conference Friday afternoon, marking good news for Green Line riders. The T announced system-wide speed restriction on the Orange, Red, Green and Blue lines last Thursday after a Department of Public Utilities safety inspection identified issues. The T lifted global restrictions on the Red, Blue and Orange lines on Friday of last week. It then lifted the global restriction for the Mattapan Trolley on Thursday of this week.Asked about the speed of inspections and repairs, Gonneville said “The safety of our customers, the safety of our employees…is our first pr...Pediatric hospital beds are in high demand for ailing children. (CNN) — Effie Schnacky was wheezy and lethargic instead of being her normal, rambunctious self one February afternoon. When her parents checked her blood oxygen level, it was hovering around 80% — dangerously low for the 7-year-old.Her mother, Jaimie, rushed Effie, who has asthma, to a local emergency room in Hudson, Wisconsin. She was quickly diagnosed with pneumonia. After a couple of hours on oxygen, steroids and nebulizer treatments with little improvement, a physician told Schnacky that her daughter needed to be transferred to a children’s hospital to receive a higher level of care. What they didn’t expect was that it would take hours to find a bed for her.Even though the respiratory surge that overwhelmed doctor’s offices and hospitals last fall is over, some parents like Schnacky are still having trouble getting their children beds in a pediatric hospital or a pediatric unit. The physical and mental...MBTA removes 187 ceiling panels at Harvard station, says no asbestos found

Crews had removed approximately 187 ceiling panels from the MBTA’s Harvard station as of Friday, the T said, just over two weeks after a falling tile narrowly missed hitting a person on a platform on March 1. MBTA Interim General Manager Jeff Gonnevile said on March 3 that the tile appeared to have fallen due to corrosion from water leaking into the area. He announced ongoing work at the time to remove similar panels. Officials provided an update on efforts on Friday after providing other updates in recent weeks. In addition to removing panels, officials said this week that crews tested and confirmed asbestos wasn’t found in the area. Officials said crews will continue to detach remaining panels overnight before engineering consultants move in to re-inspect the ceiling. Video surveillance of the March 1 incident showed a woman, later identified as Cianna Navarro walking along the Harvard platform before the ceiling tile fell close by. Navarro later told 7NEWS she...Wellesley College students hold walkout in support of transgender applicants

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — A Kansas bill banning transgender athletes from girls’ and women’s sports was vetoed by Democratic Gov. Laura Kelly for the third year in a row Friday, setting up a hotly contested fight in the Republican-controlled Legislature to override her.Kelly’s action was expected because of her two previous vetoes. Kansas Republicans made Kelly’s vetoes a major issue in multiple television attack ads when she ran for reelection last year, winning narrowly. The governor said in her veto message that the bill would harm students’ mental health and hurt the state’s efforts to recruit businesses. Kelly also said lawmakers should leave the issue to the state association set up decades ago to run student activities in middle and high schools.“Let’s be clear what this bill is all about — politics,” Kelly wrote. “It won’t increase any test scores. It won’t help any kids read or write. It won’t help any teachers prepare our kids for the re...Latest news
