A Bay Area civil rights attorney who represents more than a dozen plaintiffs in lawsuits against the Antioch Police Department has asked the U.S. Department of Justice to open an investigation into the police department, calling its officers a “clear and present danger” to the city’s residents.In a letter sent to Assistant U.S. Attorney General Kristen M. Clarke and U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of California Ismail J. Ramsey, attorney John Burris accused officers of engaging in “racially biased policing over a sustained period of years.”Burris said his law group already has filed two federal civil rights lawsuits representing 13 plaintiffs, each of whom have alleged violations against the police department. SAN LEANDRO — A man was shot Sunday afternoon while riding in a car on Interstate 580, the California Highway Patrol said.The man sustained non life-threatening injuries. The CHP did not provide any additional information about the victim.The shooting happened about 2 p.m. Sunday on eastbound I-580 near Benedict Drive. No one else in the vehicle was injured. The victim was initially driven to the San Leandro Police Department, where he was treated by paramedics before being taken to a hospital.A motive for the shooting has not been released yet by the CHP. (BCN) -- A woman suffered major injuries after a suspected sideshow participant crashed into her car while fleeing police early Sunday in Antioch. Police received multiple reports at approximately 2:51 a.m. about a sideshow developing at the Antioch Marina Harbor and Smith's Landing parking lots. As officers set up to disperse the sideshow, a vehicle fled the marina at a high rate of speed with no lights on, police said. An officer initially followed the vehicle, but called off the chase because the officer saw the fleeing vehicle's hood was blocking the windshield. (KRON) -- Santa Clara police are asking for the public's help to identify a woman who died after she was struck by an SUV early Sunday morning. The woman was between 25-35 years old, average weight and height, had brown hair, blue eyes, and several tattoos. Police said she was either white or Hispanic.The fatal accident was reported to emergency dispatchers just before 1:30 a.m. Sunday. Santa Clara Police Department officers said their investigation revealed a Honda SUV was traveling northbound on Lawrence Expressway toward Monroe Street.
