In front of their largest crowd since opening day, the Orioles had their worst offensive game of the season. With an announced attendance of 40,012 on Hawaiian shirt day, Baltimore continued its slump at the plate, totaling just three hits one day after managing only four. The poor performance at the plate spoiled another stellar start from Kyle Bradish, as Joey Gallo’s solo home run in the fourth inning was all the Minnesota Twins needed to win 1-0.Twins starter Bailey Ober pitched seven shutout innings, and Minnesota’s bullpen followed suit. The three hits the Orioles managed are the fewest they’ve totaled in any of their six shutout losses this year. One of their best scoring chances came in the ninth inning. Adley Rutschman reached on an infield single off closer Jhoan Duran, and Jorge Mateo pinch ran for the catcher and stole second. But Anthony Santander flied out to right fielder Max Kepler, who made a sliding catch in foul territory, and cleanup hitter Ryan O...Bruins go bargain-hunting, land five players in free agency

Filene’s Basement may be a thing of Boston’s glorious past, but the Bruins found their own bargain section of the free agent market on Saturday.Working on a tight budget, GM Don Sweeney signed five players for $5.8 million – a little less than Taylor Hall’s $6 million cap hit that was dealt away earlier in the week – bringing back a fan favorite, an aging one-time explosive forward, a promising young bottom-six forward, a veteran defenseman and a depth forward.Meanwhile, the B’s still have approximately $8 million left under the cap, which should be enough to sign restricted free agents Jeremy Swayman, Trent Frederic and Jakub Lauko with a little left to sign one of their top two centermen on a bonus-laden deal, should either Patrice Bergeron or David Krejci surprise us and decide not to retire.Anyone who was paying attention knew these painful days were coming. They are not going to be the same dominant team they were when they won 65 games last season, taki...Justin Verlander twirls gem, Mets launch three homers in win over Giants

The San Francisco Giants were one of the hottest teams in baseball in June and the Mets one of the worst. But Saturday at Citi Field, the roles reversed and the Mets defeated the Giants 4-1.Typically it’s the Mets’ starting pitchers who can’t get past the third time through the order or even the second. This time, it was Anthony DeSclafani who exited after giving up three solo home runs in the third inning to put the Mets up 3-0. This came after the Colts Neck, New Jersey native allowed only two in the month of June.Francisco Alvarez hit the first one of the inning. With two outs, Brandon Nimmo pulled one over the right field fence for his fourth in the last five games (12 total), and Francisco Lindor followed with one of his own to right-center field (17 total). For Alvarez, it was his 13th of the season, which ties him with Travis d’Arnaud for the most home runs by a Mets rookie (2014).DeSclafani (4-8) had been hitless to that point for the Giants (36-47). ...City Councilor Kendra Lara’s driving record shows multiple violations, sanctions

OTTAWA — The sounds of Indigenous drumming rang out alongside songs and cheers in honour of Canada Day on Saturday as Canadians from coast to coast gathered to celebrate the diversity and freedom they say make the country special.Municipalities across the country marked a return to the kinds of celebrations seen before the COVID-19 pandemic prompted years worth of cancellations, though for some the return to normalcy was marred by air quality and weather conditions that forced them to nix marquee events like fireworks shows. But at the parades, concerts and tributes that did proceed, Canadians and dignitaries alike took time to highlight traditions from Indigenous peoples and cultures around the world.“People are coming to Canada to proudly call it their home and build their lives and our communities and our country, all together,” Prime Minister Justin Trudeau told a cheering crowd at a Canada Day ceremony in Ottawa.
