AUSTIN (Nexstar) - The man who put the gag order in place for the impeachment trial against Attorney General Ken Paxton is speaking freely now that the gag order is over. Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick is defending the Texas Senate's process as "unbiased" while slamming the House's initial decision to impeach in late May.In a one-on-one interview with Nexstar, Patrick responded to claims that Republican senators' decision to acquit their former colleague was influenced by politics and money. An editorial in the Wall Street Journal said "the fix was in from the start." "Anyone that criticizes that process, well, that's on them because we did it right," Patrick told Nexstar in a one-on-one interview. He said presiding over the trial was "the most interesting and most challenging thing I've ever done." Austin (KXAN) — Austin Energy said customers used 15-20% more energy in the month of August compared to last year. The agency said the extreme heat is the largest reason behind that jump in usage.Matt Mitchell, public information officer for Austin Energy, said the agency compiled energy usage data from this summer. It ultimately found that customers used about the same amount of energy in June and July of 2023 compared to those same months in 2022.Mitchell said the increase in energy demand in late August was directly tied to the immense heat wave."I don't think that will come as much of a surprise. We saw those temperatures really elevated through the end of August. Several days in a row we had those calls for conservation from ERCOT. That really indicated to us that demand was surging," Mitchell said.Mitchell said now that the hottest months of the year have passed, Austin Energy is preparing for the cooler months still ahead.According to a report this week from ERCOT, the state ...Severe thunderstorms possible Sunday and Monday

Pat Maroon was a long player with the Anaheim Ducks when he advanced to his first conference championship game. The Ducks lost to eventual-champion Chicago at Honda Center — and it still irks him.“I thought we should have won, to be honest with you,” he said. But, the veteran winger said Saturday, that experience helped him become a three-time Stanley Cup champion, once with St. Louis in 2019, then with Tampa Bay in 2020 and 2021.“That (loss to Chicago) was kind of devastating, but when you go that far, you kind of know what it takes,” Maroon said. “And you can maybe bring that experience to different teams and players that have never been to the playoffs or past the first round, so you can really help them out.”Maroon has come to the right place. The Wild are a perennial playoff team that has been past the first round only three times, and past the second round only once, in 2003. Despite having strong teams the past three seasons — they were second in the Western Conference in 2021...Gophers football: Nubin family and friends turn out for a final joint homecoming

Aside from captain Gabriel Landeskog’s season-long absence, the second-most important player on the Colorado Avalanche roster who might not be ready for the start of the season is backup goaltender Pavel Francouz. He has yet to skate with the team during training camp, and Friday his coach said there was no timeline for Francouz’s return. That makes 23-year-old Justus Annunen, with four games of NHL experience on his resume, the next man up.“It is how it works. Somebody gets hurt and some other guy gets a chance,” Annunen said. “It’s unfortunate for Frankie, but I have a chance right now and I have to do my best. I’m trying to make the most of it. Just trying to do my best every day and fight for my spot.”The salary-cap conscious Avs did not add a veteran third goalie during the offseason. Alexandar Georgiev is entrenched as the starter, and with Francouz absent, there are four other goalies in camp. Annunen is the only one that has appeared in an NHL game.A Kempele, Finland, native,...1 killed, 5 injured after shooting at Pomona party
