Kaiser health care strike: Driven by and likely to boost a labor-action surge

A massive strike by Kaiser Permanente workers, including 23,000 in the Bay Area, is part of a surge in union activity this year from Detroit to Hollywood and likely will bring greater bargaining power to workers in health care and other industries, experts say.Kaiser’s strike followed the Sept. 30 expiration of the union contract for tens of thousands of workers. Other high-profile strikes, including a successful labor action by Hollywood writers and an ongoing strike among auto workers — and even a threatened strike by UPS employees that was a key tactic in negotiating a favorable contract — likely gave confidence to Kaiser workers, said John Logan, chair of the Labor and Employment Studies department at San Francisco State University.“When they see things like that, they think, yes, now is the time to do this. We can do it, too,” Logan said. The job action over wages, understaffing and other issues that took 75,000 Kaiser workers across the U.S. off th...Rodeo 2-year-old died from 'prolonged abuse,' not drowning: DA

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — Chesson Hadley played bogey-free Thursday in the Sanderson Farms Championship and posted an 8-under 64 for a one-shot lead in his latest bid to secure his PGA Tour card. This is the third straight year Hadley has been on the bubble to finish among the top 125 in the FedEx Cup. At least now he has time on his side, and faith in swing that he tweaked at the start of the year.He had two stretches of three straight birdies on a day of ever-shifting weather at the Country Club of Jackson to move past Henrik Norlander, who had a 65 in the morning, and Brandon Wu, who made an 18-foot birdie putt on his final hole in the afternoon for a 65.Ludvig Aberg, the 23-year-old Swede who made his Ryder Cup debut last week at Marco Simone, had a 67 that left him a little frustrated. He missed three birdie putts from 7 feet or closer on the back nine.Aberg was the No. 1 in the PGA Tour University ranking, and thus is assured his PGA Tour card for 2024. Hadley isn’t so fortun...Ganadores de los Premios Billboard Latin Music 2023: lista completa por categorías

The United Auto Workers strike may soon leave drivers stranded and in need of vehicle parts. A local expert says the strike will start to dramatically exacerbate the problem for consumers and dealers alike.“This has been going on since COVID. They had an excuse in the beginning. Now, they don’t,” said consumer attorney Robert Silverman with 1-800-Lemon-Law.He has been fielding complaint calls from potential clients with vehicles tied up at dealerships.“The problem is they’re not being given loaners. They’re being promised that if they rent a car, they’ll be reimbursed. The reimbursement is below the market. So, they can’t get a vehicle,” Silverman told WTOP.But he said consumers do have legal rights: “Every state has a lemon law.”Under the lemon law, Silverman said, consumers could get a brand-new car or a substantial refund if their car has been out of service for a long period of time.“Generally, it will inclu...Michigan has owned the Little Brown Jug. Minnesota will get fewer cracks at it in the bigger Big Ten

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The Little Brown Jug is one of the oldest trophies in college football, that classic earthenware Michigan and Minnesota have played for since well before helmets were required on the field. In this increasingly crowded Big Ten, the gaps between games are only going to grow.Though Michigan’s dominance in the series with Minnesota has stretched into a sixth decade and both teams have two other rivalries that are much fiercer, the jug is another piece of the rich history of the sport being the pushed to the background by the broadcast-driven expansion and realignment of the major conferences. The two schools have formally contested the trophy since 1909.When the second-ranked Wolverines (5-0, 2-0) play the Gophers (3-2, 1-1) on Saturday night, they’ll make just their fourth appearance at Huntington Bank Stadium that opened on Minnesota’s campus 14 years ago. One of those visits was without fans during the pandemic in 2020.“When people get really angr...No. 2 Michigan keeps the show on the road with a trip to underdog Minnesota
