Summer Out, Rain, Then Fall In

Published Thu, 28 Mar 2024 17:06:36 GMT

Summer Out, Rain, Then Fall In While it took a few hours to shake off the dense fog yesterday, it turned out to be another beautiful afternoon with temps in the mid 70s to 80 with abundant sunshine. We don’t have fog as widespread this morning to deal with, but there is some locally dense fog across the Cape and Islands, where a dense fog advisory is in place until 11am. We’ll also take a step down today, with temps in the low to mid 70s in the afternoon. More clouds are in the mix with a few spotty showers likely across the interior. Tonight, low clouds, fog and isolated showers prevail. While tomorrow isn’t an all day rain, there will be a fair amount of shower activity across the area, adding up to 0.25″ – 0.75″ through tomorrow evening. There may be some localized higher totals in the Worcester Hills, but the best chance for 2″+ of rain is across western New England and eastern Maine. We dry out Sunday, and feel the full effects of Fall as temps tumble back into th...

Boston Bruins hope to finish the job this season after record-setting run ended in a playoff flop BOSTON (AP) — The Boston Bruins are looking ahead at a new season, not back at the one where they posted the best record in NHL history and then lost in the first round of the playoffs.“My rear-view mirror is broken,” team president Cam Neely said as the 2023 Presidents Trophy winners opened training camp. “You certainly can learn from the past, and take some things away from that. But the page has turned, and we’ve got a new season coming up.”A year after setting NHL records with 65 wins and 135 points, the Bruins think they are primed for a run at the Stanley Cup. They’d have to do it without captain and six-time Selke Trophy winner Patrice Bergeron, who has retired along with scoring threat David Krejčí“People on the outside might view it as a void (considering) what other people and great players had done in the past,” general manager Don Sweeney said. “That’s evolution that every team goes through. We’re fortunate enough to have players that are really excited a...

An American tourist is arrested for smashing ancient Roman statues at a museum in Israel JERUSALEM (AP) — Israeli police have arrested an American tourist at the Israel Museum in Jerusalem after he hurled works of art to the floor, defacing two second-century Roman statues. The vandalism late Thursday raised questions about the safety of Israel’s priceless collections and stirred concern about a rise in attacks on cultural heritage in Jerusalem. Police identified the suspect as a radical 40-year-old Jewish American tourist and said initial questioning suggested he smashed the statues because he considered them “to be idolatrous and contrary to the Torah.”The man’s lawyer, Nick Kaufman, denied that he had acted out of religious fanaticism. Instead, Kaufman said, the tourist was suffering from a mental disorder that psychiatrists have labeled the Jerusalem syndrome. The condition — a form of disorientation believed to be induced by the religious magnetism of the city, which is sacred to Christians, Jews and Muslims — is said to cause foreign pilgrims to believ...

Georgia’s governor continues rollback of state gas and diesel taxes for another month ATLANTA (AP) — Georgia’s state taxes on gasoline and diesel will be suspended for another month after Gov. Brian Kemp extended the tax rollback in a Friday executive order. The suspension of the taxes, at 31.2 cents per gallon of gasoline and 35 cents per gallon of diesel, had been scheduled to end next Thursday but will now run through at least Nov. 11.The Republican governor last month revived what was a campaign tactic during his reelection bid in 2022, when he signed a law suspending the gas tax with broad bipartisan support. Kemp signed seven separate extensions after that, with the state forgoing an estimated $1.7 billion in revenue from March 2022 to January 2023.Georgia’s governor can suspend the collection of taxes during an emergency as long as lawmakers approve it the next time they meet. In September, Kemp issued a novel legal declaration finding that high prices were such an emergency. The 2022 suspensions came under a state of emergency related to COVID-19.K...
